Description: Airports Council International - ACI - is the only worldwide professional association of airports. ACI is a non-profit-making organisation representing more than 475 member airport operators with almost 1,200 airports in 152 countries worldwide. ACI is organised into six geographical regions : Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America/Caribbean, North America and the Pacific. In 1996, these airports handled over 2 billion passengers, 30 million tonnes of freight and 36 million aircraft movements. The European Region of ACI, based in Brussels, Belgium, represents the interests of some 200 airport operators with some 400 airports in 48 countries from the Pacific seaboard of Russia in the East to the Portuguese Azores in the West and from the Canary Islands, Spain, in the South to Norway in the North. ACI EUROPE member airports enplane 90% of commercial air traffic in Europe and in 1995 handled almost 760 million passengers, over 11 million metric tonnes of cargo and some 14.2 million aircraft movements. Member airports invested about 3.6 billion ECU in new airport facilities in 1996, out of a total revenue that year of around 13 billion ECU.
