Research in our department focuses on studies of nonlinear chemical patterns and instabilities as well as oscillations, bistability and waves in biochemical and cellular systems. Our goal is to understand the origin of rhythms and spatiotemporal patterns which arise beyond a critical point of instability in chemical, physical and biological systems maintained out-of-equilibrium. We analyze the properties and conditions for onset of such dissipative structures in systems as varied as chemical reactors, catalysis, vegetation, fuel cells, polymers, active gels, hydrodynamics, biological regulatory networks in various cell types, and environmental systems.
