MA-INFOorganized by the faculty of Sciences during academic year 2017-2018
This programme is thaught entirely in English.
Our former students are active in a large variety of sectors: ranging from banks, insurance companies, software industry, consultancy, hospitals, schools, universities, to national and international administrations, ... etc. They work as project leaders, IT specialists, network architects, security experts, teachers or researchers. Some of them own their own business, and other are top managers in administrations.

The master program aims at educating students that, afterwards, are able both to start a PhD program in Computer Science, and for the majority of the students, to be a highly competent and skilled computer scientist in the IT industry. We want to educate the next generation of IT executives and managers which are aware of their role in the society, that are autonomous and able to acquire efficiently new knowledge all along their career.
The master program is organized around three main axes: topics within computer science, an introduction to research through the writing of a master thesis, and courses to prepare the student to enter the job market and industry.
The master program has been designed for students that have general competences in computer science as the one acquired during the BA in computer science at ULB :
that are able to gather information and to acquire new knowledge autonomously, with scientific rigor and which are able to take a critical attitude in this process.
that master the main mathematical and formal tools needed in Computer Science.
that can read technical literature in English and to engage in a technical conversation in English as most of the courses in our MA are taught in English (with a few exceptions for optional courses).
that master the main concepts and competences related to programming, programming languages, algorithms, software engineering, operating systems, and fundamental theoretical results in computer science.
that are able to design alone, or within a group, a computer application of representative complexity, using efficiently tools from software engineering.
Students that have not acquired the appropriate background during their BA may in some circumstances have the opportunity to compensate for their weaknesses with an adapted program of studies.
The Master's course is basically made up of advanced classes benefiting from input from internationally recognised research projects being carried out by researchers belonging to either the ULB or the VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel).
In MA2, the students can opt for an internship in a company or in a research center. The internship is worth 15 ECTS and lasts 3 months full time
The master's course is taught in english and therefore attracts foreign students.
During the many practicals, teaching assistants are present to help the students, and are available most of the time to answer the student's questions.
Computer rooms equipped with various kinds of material, running different operating systems, and wi-fi network, are available to the students, to allow them to practice and to realise the project.
The researchers from the computer science department of the Science faculty are internationally acknowledged for the quality of their contributions, as can be seen from the many publications and collaborations with famous institutions abroad, and from the many prizes that have been awarded to them.
Our master program is organized around the strong and internationally recognized scientific competences of our Professors. A large number of courses are directly related to the main research topics developed in our department. International mobility of students is also encouraged. We offer coherent sets of specialized courses in the following areas of computer science:
embedded systems, formal methods and cryptography
machine learning and computational intelligence
combinatorial optimization and operational research
algorithms graphs and geometry
databases and web technologies
Each course is usually organized in two parts: a theoretical part in which concepts and theories are developed, and a more practical/applied part where those concepts are applied to examples and case studies. The courses are complemented by medium to large size projects for which a large number of concepts, often introduced in several different courses, are needed and confronted to practice.
Students can benefit from international programs (like for example the Erasmus program) to follow courses abroad during one semester. The department has several active agreements with other departments in computer science around Europe and North America. More specifically, the students that follow the specialization on "combinatorial optimization and operational research" have the opportunity to do one or two semesters at the Université de Nantes and to obtain a double degree from the two institutions.
Université de Nantes, Vrije Universiteit Brussel
The concept of a year of studies gives way to a system of accumulation of credits based on the student's individual programme. The cycle programme is offered in units of 60 credits. The units of 60 credits are proposed as an "ideal" course of study for students enrolled in this programme.
