MA-LORIAorganized by the faculty of Letters, Translation and Communication during academic year 2017-2018
The Master in Ancient Languages and Literature: Oriental Studies follows on directly from the Bachelor's course of the same name, giving students the chance to deepen their knowledge in this area before moving on to a career as an orientalist or perhaps working on a doctoral thesis.
Students' knowledge is expanded further through the philological, historical and literary study of a broad range of texts and periods covering the diachronics of these languages. A historical and comparative approach is also taken to the development and functioning of the languages as members of the Hamito-Semitic and Indo-European family of languages.
The Master in Ancient Languages and Literature offers complete training based on critical analysis, independence, a creative approach to problem-solving and on written and oral communication. The skills acquired, together with the culture studied, the open-mindedness and adaptability and work done individually or in groups mean that the knowledge gained through the course can be applied to an extremely broad range of areas.
The Master in Ancient Languages and Literature: Oriental Studies offers a special opportunity for further study because of its dual focus: The Egypt and Mesopotamia option enables students to acquire further knowledge of the relevant languages and history, culture and ideas in the fields of Egyptology (development of the Egyptian language and its writings up to Coptic) and Assyriology.
The concept of a year of studies gives way to a system of accumulation of credits based on the student's individual programme. The cycle programme is offered in units of 60 credits. The units of 60 credits are proposed as an "ideal" course of study for students enrolled in this programme.
