Master in French and Romance Languages and Literatures : General

MA-LROMAorganized by the faculty of Letters, Translation and Communication during academic year 2017-2018

Programme objectives

The main focus of the course is on developing the skills required to define an issue properly and find the means to respond to it in a relevant and original way. Participants gain the relevant skills through specialised study of French language and literature, using a variety of methodologies involving both diachronic and synchronic approaches. The course also provides a solid grounding in one or several Romance languages.

The skills and knowledge developed are put to use when students write their dissertation. This is an important exercise in which students demonstrate their ability to find an original approach to a subject and address it with scientific objectivity.

Benefits of the ULB training

The course is based on a common programme to which are added options and specialisations meaning that participants can shape their qualification to suit their personality and interests. This flexibility facilitates student mobility, something which is highly encouraged. Exchanges are possible with no fewer than 39 universities (in 13 different European countries, with more still in Canadian and Japanese universities) and can last from 3 months to a full academic year. Access to other university departments means that multi-disciplinary courses with a direct connection to highly advanced research can be offered. The ULB is the only university in the French-speaking administrative region of Belgium where Portuguese is taught as a Bachelor's or Master's course.

Progression per curriculum unit

The concept of a year of studies gives way to a system of accumulation of credits based on the student's individual programme. The cycle programme is offered in units of 60 credits. The units of 60 credits are proposed as an "ideal" course of study for students enrolled in this programme.
