MA-PETHIorganized by the faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences during academic year 2017-2018
This Master teaches participants to apply a rigorous, critical and creative intellectual approach to philosophical knowledge.
It provides a deeper knowledge of the history of philosophy, its different fields (anthropology, epistemology, aesthetics, hermeneutics, logic, metaphysics, ontology, science and techniques, etc.), major topics and developments. It aims to provide the necessary skills for critical reading of a text, structuring philosophical problems, using specific methodology and reasoning and applying different pieces of knowledge when carrying out reflection and setting out ideas in writing or in a discussion. It also provides the essential knowledge (in didactics, educational psychology, use of different media, etc.) and practical skills (exercises, practical teaching of students) necessary for teaching philosophy.
Philosophy teaching at the ULB is rooted in the study of the texts which have shaped its traditions and aims to broaden the scope of philosophical reflection to cover broader contemporary issues, such as politics, medicine, law, anthropology, sciences, technical issues, etc. The course develops further some of the main focuses of the Bachelor's course, like the history of philosophy, logic, or the relationship between science and techniques. It also attaches considerable importance to aesthetics by offering it as a main option.
The Philosophy of Science and Technique optional module is exceptional in offering many opportunities to take advantage of classes given in other Faculties. This openness towards other disciplines helps to encourage philosophical reflection based on sound knowledge and a range of practices. This option is organised in partnership with the University of Liege and the Catholic University of Louvain.
The concept of a year of studies gives way to a system of accumulation of credits based on the student's individual programme. The cycle programme is offered in units of 60 credits. The units of 60 credits are proposed as an "ideal" course of study for students enrolled in this programme.
