Master in Information and Communication Science and technology

MA-STICorganized by the faculty of Letters, Translation and Communication during academic year 2017-2018

Programme objectives

Our information and knowledge societies are characterised by an impressive amount of information made available through a range of information systems and communications technologies (Internet, intranet, and databases). In such a context, the importance attached to information specialists continues to grow, both in the public and private sector.

This MA offers a university-level multi-discipline course geared to training specialists capable of responding to the strategic issues involved in the management of information and communication.

Back in 1977, the ULB - through its then Infodoc department - pioneered a university degree in the field of information management. Thirty years later, this MA capitalises on the experience gained. The MA has two aims: to provide teaching in information structuring in the broadest sense, which requires high-level skills in abstraction and conceptualisation. Backing this up, the course goes on to offer the technological knowledge needed for the operational implementation of information systems.

With its strict interdisciplinary approach, this conceptual and technological course slots in well with students' existing university curricula. As an application field complementing their primary discipline, the course will in all probability enhance their skills in information management and communication.

Benefits of the ULB training

The multidisciplinary nature of the course combines humanities and sciences, theory and practice. Moreover, the practical work foreseen in the programme includes projects bringing together several disciplines and reflecting the logical sequence of steps to be taken when designing and implementing information systems and communications.

The opportunity of doing part of the course at a university abroad (as part of a European or international exchange programme) gives this MA course aninternational dimension.

The training also ties in with current issues in scientific research. The teaching team is involved in various research projects dealing with information and communication technology and their application in the information society. Students will be confronted with these not only in certain stages of their practical work, but especially when writing their dissertation.

Progression per curriculum unit

The concept of a year of studies gives way to a system of accumulation of credits based on the student's individual programme. The cycle programme is offered in units of 60 credits. The units of 60 credits are proposed as an "ideal" course of study for students enrolled in this programme.
